How to install and manage fonts in Windows 10

fonts in Windows 10

Among the innovations that have accompanied Windows 10 compared to previous versions of the Microsoft operating system, there is a new method of installing and managing fonts.

The tool Font present in Control panel, although still available, it was joined by the possibility of downloading the fonts directly from the Store. In this article we will see how it is possible to install and manage fonts with Windows 10, fully exploiting the potential of this new OS.

Install and manage fonts with Windows 10 also using the store

Installing and managing fonts on Windows 10 is a useful type of operation for those who use various types of applications. Beyond word processors, in fact, rather complex software like Photoshop, or in any case image editing software, can use fonts to create writings with particular graphic effects.

Consequently, limiting yourself to the fonts provided by Microsoft by default for your operating system can be extremely limiting.

To this must be added the fact that, for decades, many people have delighted in creating specific fonts. Some of them are inspired by particular brands or styles, while others are completely original.

Many of them are distributed totally free of charge and, therefore, trying them on your documents costs you practically nothing … if not the time spent for the installation!

The first step, essential before starting, is to see what fonts are installed on your computer. To do this go up SettingsCustomizationCharacters.

Here you can view all the fonts with name and some example letters, by clicking on the icon of the single character, a series of information will be activated about it.

Download fonts directly from the store

Microsoft Store allows the download of additional fonts in a rather simple way. Specifically, it is necessary to go in Settings, click on Customization, then select the card Characters.

Here it is, therefore, possible to install new ones. This can be done simply by installing an already downloaded font, through a simple drag-drop in the dotted box below Add characters. Alternatively, if the fonts have not been downloaded but must be installed directly from the Microsoft Store, it is good to click on Get other fonts from the Microsoft Store.

At this point you just have to get lost in the many sets of fonts that are offered on the store, ranging from the most classic to the most imaginative ones.

How to delete an installed font

Deleting a character is not a particularly common operation. Despite this, you may feel the need to quickly clean them to make fonts that are really useful easier to find.

To remove a font from your system, you need to go to the Control panel, to type Characters and click on the corresponding item. At this point, by right-clicking and selecting Delete, you can delete a font from your computer.

Remember, however, that it is recommended to uninstall only added characters of your own free will and not those present by default: in fact, they are probably used by apps installed on your computer and, their removal could create problems for this software.

In case of problems, you can still always restore the default fonts to return to the default fonts present in Windows base.

Windows 10 and fonts: what formats are supported

Windows allows you to install font files in TrueType (.ttf), OpenType (.otf), TrueType Collection (.ttc) or PostScript Type 1 (.pfb + .pfm) formats. However, for some of these formats, the installation procedure may be different from what has been described so far.

To install such a font file, right-click and select the command Install or double-click the font to preview it, then click the Install button.

In addition to what is offered by the store, always keep in mind that there are numerous sites that offer (completely free of charge) a large number of fonts that vary from the most classic to the most bizarre and fun.
