[Guide] How To Install Windows 8 in A Virtual Machine

The tutorial we present you is suitable both for computers running Windows (eg Windows 7) and for Linux distributions (eg Ubuntu). This tutorial is also valid in any version of Windows 8 regardless of whether in English or be translated into Portuguese (from Portugal or Brazil). For indicative purposes only used an image of Windows 8 Professional English language to create a virtual machine inside Ubuntu.

To create a virtual machine of Windows 8 needs to meet the following prerequisites:

  1. Minimum requirements to install Windows 8 (see below)
  2. An already installed operating system (Windows XP/Vista/7, Ubuntu or other Linux distribution)
  3. VMWare Player (virtualization software)
  4. ISO file or DVD disc Windows 8

Besides the software needed to create a virtual machine needs to reserve a set of resources on your machine in order to satisfy the minimum requirements for running Windows 8 Minimum requirements are.:

  • Processor:   1GHz or higher
  • RAM:   1GB (32bit) or 2GB (64bit)
  • Disk Space:   16GB (32bit) or 20Gb (64bit)
  • Graphics: Microsoft DirectX 9 compatible or higher
  • 1 – Install VMWare Player

Installing VMWare Player is very simple, just to visit the official site here and download the version for your operating system.

Installation on Windows is done by running an executable file, you just have to follow the steps in the installation wizard to complete the installation. If you are installing the VMWare Player in a Windows version go to step 2.

However to install on Linux has to perform the following commands in the console. The three commands then change to the directory where you downloaded the file from the Ubuntu installation, install the requirements to run VMWare Player, and finally execute the installation program. We assume that you have downloaded the installation file of VMWare Player for your system folder (ie / home / username / Downloads>)

    build-essential sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname-r`
    cd Transfers
gksudo bash VMware-Player-5.0.0-812388.i386.bundle (32 bit version)
    gksudo bash VMware-Player-5.0.0- 812388.x86_64.bundle (64 bit version)

2 – Install Windows 8 in VMWare Player

Assuming you have already installed VMWare Player is able to create a virtual machine with Windows 8. Run the VMWare Player accessing the group created by the application through the start if you’re using Windows or search the application by typing “VMWare” menu the original panel if you’re using Ubuntu.

As you can see, the VMWare Player is a simple and minimalist virtualization solution adjusted to the most inexperienced users. To begin the process click on the side zone “option Create a new Virtual Machine ”

Then VMWare will launch a wizard to quickly create a virtual machine (Wizard) that will guide you step by step throughout the process. This wizard will have to provide the means with VMWare Player you want to install Windows 8. Drawer may insert in your DVD player a genuine copy of Windows 8 and choose ” Use physical drive “.Alternatively in case you have an image of Windows 8 (an ISO file), select ” Use ISO Image “. Click the “Next” button to continue. If all goes well, the VMWare Player will detect the operating system you want to install, and in our case appears below ” Windows 8 detected ”

The next step will have to provide the original key that’s included with your copy of Windows 8. If you’ve got Windows 8 in ISO format on TechNet or DreamSpark (if student) Microsoft these platforms will have access to your key. In this screen you can still write your name (or nickname) in the “Full Name”, which claims that Windows 8 uses in your user account. If you want to protect authentication in Windows 8 using your account can still set the same password authentication screen. Click “Next” when finished.

On the next screen you can give a name to your new virtual machine and specify where you will want the virtual machine files will be installed. If you have more than one partition, you can choose to create these files in more empty partition. In the case of Windows, instead of storing the folder “C:” Where have installed your previous version of Windows 8, you can specify if you have space in another letter (D:, E:, G:,) depending on the configuration of your computer .

The time to choose the disk space that allows for the virtual machine arrived. How we choose to virtualize 32-bit version of Windows 8, we chose 20GB maximum space “option maximum disk size . ” In the remaining options can leave as they are set by option and click “next”.

We reached the final screen where the VMWare Player will display a summary of the characteristics of the virtual machine that will create. However no longer finish the installation, there are still some options that should be set prior to setting up and installing the Windows 8 virtual machine. Click ” Costumize Hardware “.

In the Advanced Settings menu in the side section ” Device => Memory “, adjust the slider up to the position between 1 and 2GB measure and display the value of 1552 MB defined above. If you have the opportunity to spend more memory to use the virtual machine without affecting the performance of your system, we recommend that you do this because you will notice much speed on your installation of Windows 8.

Optionally, if the processor in your computer has more than one core (2 or 4 colors for example) choose the left side area ” device => “processors “and the option” number of processors colors “the color number of your processor . Once you have finished your settings click “Save” and the next screen, review the settings are correct and when you are sure that everything is well configured, start up the virtual machine creation by clicking ” Finish “.

From this moment the VMWare player will be in charge of creating the virtual machine, allocating disk space, memory and resources that find it necessary to install Windowss 8. In the process will ask you whether to install VMWare Tools . This utility allows you to run windows at higher resolutions within the virtual machine, in contrast with the resolution of 640 × 480 using default. Since Windows 8 is designed to run at lower resolutions not 1024 × 769 advise you install VMWare Tools .

Depending on the capabilities of your machine installation will take approximately 20 minutes to complete. After the installation Windows 8 restarts to configure the system and create your username so that you can log into your new installation of Windows 8.

3 – Enjoy your installation of Windows 8

Time to enjoy a finished installation of new innovations and explore … In the coming days we will bring you tips in order to acclimatise to the new operating system from microsoft
