Bitwarden: the best free alternative to LastPass

LastPass is one of the most popular password management programs that allow you to securely store all your data. Not only that, but this software also allows you to fill in all payment details and shipping information automatically, to keep digital copies of documents, and also to generate long and random passwords to protect against attacks.

LastPass is one of the most popular software and has, in fact, been downloaded by more than 20 million users worldwide. However, starting from March 16, the program has introduced limitations in its free plan and many users were not happy with the decision so much that they decided to change the application.

What’s changing in LastPass

LastPass has always been granted access from two types of devices: a computer (with an extension for all browsers) or mobile devices (including mobile phones, smartwatches, and tablets). From March 16, those who use a free LastPass subscription can no longer use the program on both mobile devices and PCs but must choose and set up the device they intend to use the program on. Each user has three opportunities to test the program on different devices and then choose the preferred one.

Those who want unlimited access on all types of devices and have data synchronization can upgrade to LastPass Premium or LastPass Family, two subscriptions that also contain several advanced features. Furthermore, from 17 May 2021, users of LastPass Free will only have basic support (consisting of support center and community), while Premium and Family users will have personal support from LastPass via email.

Bitwarden as an alternative to LastPass

Since LastPass no longer supports synchronization between devices in the free plan many have decided to change the application. Among the many alternatives, we can say that Bitwarden is one of the best solutions, in terms of both functionality and safety. Although the graphics are simple and less attractive than LastPass, Bitwarden offers many useful features in its free plan, while those who need extra features can subscribe to its Premium and Family plans at reasonable prices. Bitwarden, in fact, offers users support for synchronization between devices, L’unlimited password storage, and the strong password generation service already in the free plan.

It should be noted that LastPass is a service that offers extensions for all popular web browsers, but does not have a native desktop app for PC (but only for Android, iPhone and iPad). Bitwarden, on the other hand, allows you to download a native app for Windows 10, Linux, and Mac, with the Mac app also supporting Touch ID.

Finally, it must be remembered that Bitwarden is an open-source product, this means that third-party security companies can verify the code and make sure that Bitwarden is not vulnerable to hacker attacks.
