Huawei Mate X Foldable Smartphone

Huawei has launched the Huawei Mate X smartphone. It is currently available only in China.

Huawei sells the Mate X for 16,990 yuan, which is about 2,400 US dollars or 155,000 rubles. Despite such a high price, the entire first batch of devices was sold out almost instantly.

We can expect that now resellers will put up the Mate X for sale on eBay, AliExpress and other similar sites at very high prices and will send this device to other countries.

However, there are not many who want to buy Mate X outside of China. The thing is that this smartphone is devoid of Google applications.

It is known that most Google services are blocked in China (almost all smartphones for the Chinese market are released without them). But even if it were not for this circumstance, Huawei will still not be able to install these services on the Mate X due to a ban on the part of the US authorities.

It’s not enough to buy this device, you need to somehow install the Play Store, Gmail, YouTube and other applications on it, without which it is difficult to imagine a full-fledged smartphone.

In the folded format, the diagonal of the front screen of the Mate X is 6.6 inches with a resolution of 2480 × 1148 pixels, and the rear – 6.38 inches with a resolution of 2480 × 892 pixels.

If you open the device, you get an 8-inch display with a resolution of 2480 × 2200 pixels and an aspect ratio of 8: 7. The screen is made according to OLED technology and can withstand multiple bends without damaging the pixels.

When unfolded, the Mate X has a thickness of 5.1 mm, and when folded – 11 mm. On one of the faces of the gadget, there is a protruding panel, in which a charging connector, a fingerprint scanner, and part of the “filling” are built-in.

The Kirin 990 processor with the Balong 5000 modem, which supports fifth-generation communication networks, is responsible for performance.

The amount of RAM – 8 GB, storage – 512 GB. The smartphone received four cameras with Leica optics. The resolution of the main module is 40 megapixels, there is also a 16 megapixel wide-angle, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens and a 3D camera with a depth sensor.

The device supports the split-screen and simultaneous launch of several applications, and also automatically changes the program interface when the display opens. The battery for 4500 mAh is responsible for the autonomy of the novelty, which can be filled up very quickly: the company implemented a proprietary charging technology of 55 watts.

In May 2019, the U.S. Department of Commerce blacklisted Huawei due to suspected sanctions against North Korea and Iraq. US companies are prohibited from selling Huawei components for smartphones, as well as licensing operating systems.

US authorities cannot prohibit Huawei from installing on Android smartphones, as it is an open and free operating system. But at the same time, Google can no longer provide Huawei with the ability to add its services to Android, including the Play Store, YouTube, and dozens of other popular applications around the world.

In September, Huawei launched the Mate 30 series flagship smartphones, the first in their history without Google’s built-in services. Pretty soon a workaround was found, these services could be installed using the LZ Play application, which works as a corporate program manager.

After some time, the server running LZ Play was disconnected. This server belongs to the Chinese company Alibaba, which also owns the AliExpress trading platform. It is also reported that the Mate 30 and Mate 30 Pro smartphones stopped passing the SafetyNet security test, which may cause some applications (for example, banking) to not work on them.

In the Russian catalog of Huawei, there are still a lot of models of smartphones with Android and Google applications. The company will continue to update them, despite U.S. sanctions.
