How to use a PS4 controller with an Android device

PS4 controller with an Android device

If you have a modern game console it is likely that you already have a controller that has a Bluetooth connection. In fact, most of the newer console controllers either use Bluetooth as standard or include it for use on other platforms. This means that, for example, you can use the PlayStation 4 controller to play with your phone, tablet, or another device.

Connect a PS4 controller with an Android device

The PlayStation 4 DualShock 4 is perfect for playing on PC as it is a comfortable and precise controller but many are wondering how you can also connect it to an Android device.

Here, then, is a guide that allows you to understand how you can connect and use the PS4 controller to play with your smartphone, tablet, or Android TV.

On your Android device, make sure Bluetooth is turned on. To do this, go to Settings> Bluetooth menu, and once there follow these instructions.

  1. Turn on Bluetooth and make sure your phone starts searching for the nearest devices it can connect with.
  2. Grab the controller and hold the PlayStation button and the Share button at the same time for a few seconds. The controller light will start blinking to let you know it is in pairing mode.
  3. Go back to your phone and in the list of Bluetooth connectable devices look for a device called the Wireless Controller. Tap that device to begin the pairing process.

Once connected, the controller light should stop flashing and you should receive a confirmation on your phone that the connection is successful. If everything is done correctly, you will have connected the controller to the device and can use it to navigate the Android user interface.

Is it recommended to use the PS4 controller with an Android device?

Now you may be wondering how the PS4 controller works on an Android device. The answer to this question may vary. What we recommend that you do is try your favorite games and check if they have any problems.

During some tests, it was found that the PS4 controller may not perform as well as a dedicated mobile controller or even as the Xbox One controller. For example, in Modern Combat 5, while it appears to be possible to move the character and turn the camera using the analog sticks, the aim and shoot buttons have been relegated to the Share and Options buttons respectively. This has created a rather awkward and not at all fast control scheme that makes the PS4 controller unsuitable for use on an Android device. At this point, all that remains is to check if the games allow you to ” remap” the buttons allowing you to set the most useful functions to your liking.

If you have a game that works well and that allows you to “remap” the buttons, in fact, you will be pleasantly surprised by what you can do with this controller.

Alternatives to the DualShock controller

However be aware that there are controllers that are easier to use and some, like the Xbox One controller, that seems more compatible with Android devices.
