GeForce Chromebooks

Are you a video game lover but don’t have a gaming device? It doesn’t matter, because streaming games are all the rage. You already had Google Stadia available on any Android and Android TV, but now there is more because you can already install GeForce Now on your Chromebook, at least the beta.

Nvidia’s streaming gaming platform turns your Chromebook into a console

Netflix opened the Pandora’s box of streaming platforms a few years ago, but this issue has advanced so much that now even video games can be enjoyed in streaming. Sure you know Google Stadia, and lately, there is a lot of talk about Project xCloud, but before them, there was another, GeForce Now.

Nvidia’s streaming gaming platform pioneered the subject, is available on multiple platforms and now has one more. If you have a Chromebook, you can now visit the official GeForce Now website, register, and start playing on your laptop.

The requirements? Have a Chromebook, a good connection and that’s it because the games are run from the browser and all the load is taken by the servers. Of course, if you already had a GeForce Now account, you can continue enjoying your games right from where you left them.

At the moment GeForce Now for Chrome OS is only available in beta, but that does not mean that the platform works badly. Nvidia hasn’t disclosed any specific issues, but they may have a hiccup or two they want to fix before releasing the stable version.

It’s great to have this new service on Chromebooks. Why? Because not only does it continue to demolish the myth that Chromebooks are only used for office automation, but it also allows access to very good games without spending too much. But how many titles are we talking about?

With GeForce Now, you can play for free more than 650 titles on your Chromebook

One of the things that make GeForce Now an interesting platform is not only the experience in this field but its catalog. Nvidia offers more than 650 titles divided into all kinds of categories, from indies to FPS and driving games.

Most of the catalog is handled directly from Steam, although there are also games from the Epic Games store and other platforms. But wait, because we haven’t told you the best yet.

You may not know it, but GeForce Now can be enjoyed for free, albeit with some limitations. A free subscription puts you at the end of the line to access the servers, but you will also have no RTX graphics and you can only play 6 hours a day in uninterrupted sessions of up to 1 hour.

Do you want to remove the restrictions? GeForce Now also has a premium subscription of 5.49 euros per month with which you will get priority access and Ray-Tracing graphics. Even so, you can also enjoy a special offer in which you will only pay 27.45 euros for six months and you will have access to exclusive content from the Hyper Scape game.

To all these, at what resolution does GeForce Now work? Unlike Stadia that can be played in 4K, Nvidia prefers to go for a Full HD resolution at 60 fpsThe reason? The company prefers to offer a very stable gaming experience rather than selling a resolution that requires a very expensive connection.

Chrome OS was introduced more than ten years ago but only in recent years has it registered an important growth in its functionality. The arrival of the Play Store (not available for all devices) has significantly increased the usable software fleet making Chromebooks among the most interesting laptops.

Those looking for an ultra-portable device, for productivity but not only, can carefully evaluate the purchase of one of the best Chromebooks currently available on the market.

Playing on Chromebooks is possible even if the options available to users are still very limited. There are not many games available on the Play Store that can be fully exploited on a Chromebook. In the same way, the titles normally available on consoles or Windows PC (via Steam, Epic, the Microsoft Store, etc.) are not available on Chrome OS, thus limiting the options considerably.

To play with your Chromebook you can rely on different solutions. Without compromising the security of the Chrome OS system, the owner of a device of this type will be able to access a good catalog of titles by mainly exploiting the Android apps, accessible for several years on many Chrome OS models, and the extensions of the Chrome Web Store.

Also worth considering is the possibility of using a video game streaming service, such as Stadia, which allows you to play a video game using an external server.

Although with some limitations, gaming on the Chromebook is possible. Here are the best games to try on your laptop with Chrome OS.

Video game streaming services

The streaming services are, to many, the future of gaming. Thanks to this solution it is possible to play, in high resolution, very recent and demanding titles (in terms of hardware resources) even without having a particularly powerful PC.

For this reason, for those who have a Chromebook, betting on a streaming service for gaming can be a winning choice. Since there is no need for particularly high technical specifications and there are no software limits related to Chrome OS, this is the first option to consider.

Currently, the reference for streaming games for Chromebooks is Google Stadia. The service, launched by Google in 2019, is constantly growing and offers constantly improving performance and a catalog of stocks growing strongly. In the future, other services (such as Ge Force NOW and Project xCloud) may also enrich the options of Chromebook owners.

Google Stadia

Google Stadia

Google Stadia may be the ideal choice for gaming with a Chromebook. Just open Google Chrome and access the official Stadia website to take advantage of the service. After creating a new account on the platform, you can bet on the Stadia Pro subscription service for the price of 9.99 Euros per month.

This service, available with the first month free, allows you to access a rich catalog of games to play, streaming, from any device, including Chromebooks. To register, just use your Google account.

Then there is the possibility of using the Stadia store to purchase games to be accessed instantly, without the need to wait for the completion of downloads and updates. In a few seconds, thanks to Stadia, you can transform your Chromebook into a real gaming PC with many titles to try.

The only requirement (in addition to the registration of the account and the activation of the subscription) is represented by the Internet connection. Being a streaming service to continue playing you will need a good connection.

For access to Stadia and all the games on the platform, Google recommends a minimum speed of 10 Mbps. The maximum supported resolution is 4K but the image quality of the game is dynamic and adapts to the speed of the connection. All titles can be played using a Stadia controller or a PS4 controller, Xbox One, or any other supported controller.

On Google Stadia there are many titles, also very recent. A good portion of the titles released in recent years on consoles and Windows PCs are available and playable, with excellent performance, through Stadia. This solution can, therefore, be an excellent ploy to get around the hardware and software limitations of Chromebooks.

Android app for Chromebook

One of the main options for gaming on Chromebook is represented by Android apps, available on an ever-growing number of Chrome OS devices, through the Google Play Store. By taking advantage of the rich catalog of software available on Android, it is possible to enrich the functionality of Chromebooks. Also regarding gaming, this solution offers several options to keep an eye on.

Asphalt 9: Legends

Being designed to be used on the move, Chromebooks are ideal for short but intense gaming sessions. One of the best games that can be used on Chrome OS for this purpose is Asphalt 9: Legends. Gameloft’s title is the latest evolution of the Asphalt series and supports both single-player and online multiplayer. The game includes several tracks and a rich catalog of cars, presenting varied and dynamic gameplay that can potentially offer hours of play.

From the graphic point of view, the game is the highest peak reached by the Gameloft series and guarantees excellent performance allowing you to play even in 4K with a high frame rate. The game supports the use of the keyboard in addition to the touch controls designed for Android. Asphalt 9: Legends is available for free (with ads and in-app purchases).

One of the most interesting games to download from the Play Store for Chromebooks is PinOut. It is an advanced version of the classic pinball machine. The gaming experience is fun and varied. The title also presents a certain level of challenge and can offer many hours of play even to the most experienced gamers. It is an ideal game both for quick games and for longer and more articulated sessions.

PinOut supports the keyboard of the Chromebook and, therefore, it is very simple to play without having to resort to touch controls designed for Android smartphones and tablets. The game is also available for free and without in-app ads. The premium version of the title, which can be unlocked in-game directly, costs 3.99 euros and allows you to take advantage of the checkpoints to easily complete all the levels provided for in the title.

Sonic the Hedgehog Classic

Retro gaming is always a winning choice for a mobile gaming session. No emulators are available on Chromebook but it is possible to play Sonic the Hedgehog Classic without any problems. It is the first title that gave birth to the saga of the hugely popular blue hedgehog, recently also featured on cinema screens.

The original title, which is about to turn 30, is available in its entirety on Chromebook. The game is free but there are in-app ads that can be removed for € 1.99. Sonic the Hedgehog Classic also fully supports the keyboard with the W, A, S, and D keys which are used for movement and the J key which is used for jumping.

Pocket Mortys

Pocket Mortys is one of the most particular titles in the mobile sector. The title, mimicking the mechanics of the popular Pokémon series, is based on the multi-verse concept introduced during the first season of the Rick and Morty series. The objective of the game is to capture all the Mortys present in the multi-verse (they are over 100 different types), train them, and challenge the Mortys to oppose each other. Next, we will have to fight and defeat the Rick Council.

The game almost fully supports the keyboard. Almost all the keys are mapped and can be used to take advantage of all the main functions of the game. In some cases, in any case, you will have to resort to the on-screen controls because of the lack of full support. Pocket Mortys is available for free but there are in-app purchases

Alto’s Odyssey

Alto’s Odyssey, a follow-up to Alto’s Adventure, is undoubtedly one of the most popular titles on the mobile gaming scene. It is an evolution of traditional endless runners, one of the most common game types on mobile devices. Like its predecessor, Alto’s Odyssey offers varied gameplay and a technical and artistic realization of the highest level. It is a product to try, both for short sessions and for more articulate game sessions.

Available for download for free, Alto’s Odyssey includes keyboard support but, by presenting very simple commands (just “plug” on any part of the screen), you can also use the touch controls. The game, both for its simplicity and its quality, is a valuable piece of the catalog of titles available for Chromebook

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is the re-edition of one of the most important RPGs in videogame history. Arrived on PC in the late 90s, the game was brought back to life with the Enhanced Edition created by Overhaul Games and available on different platforms, including a mobile version available on the Play Store.

This version of Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition can also be played excellently on Chromebooks, offering the opportunity to experience many hours of adventure between various fights and many areas to explore.

On Chromebook, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition guarantees mouse/touchpad support, an essential element on PC, and on the keyboard as well as supporting touch controls designed for the Android version. Also, note the absence of controller support (the title was never designed to be managed via the controller). In addition to the full version of the adventure, the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion is also included.

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is available for purchase at a total cost of 10.99 Euros. There are no announcements and additional in-game purchases to be made. Once the purchase is complete it will be possible to play the entire adventure without any limitation.

Fallout Shelter

Another title to try on Chromebook is Fallout Shelter. It is a game that arrived in 2015 on mobile devices (Android and iOS) and more recently also on Windows PC and consoles. Fallout Shelter is a management system that takes up the themes of the Fallout video game series which, in recent years, has had an excellent success starting from Fallout 3.

The title puts the player in the shoes of the supervisor of a Vault, the underground fortresses present in the universe Fallout narrative.

The player’s task will be to manage all aspects of the vault and collect resources for survival. The mechanics of Fallout Shelter are now run in and appreciated by millions of players all over the world (a total of 100 million players has been exceeded).

From a technical point of view, Fallout Shelter presents support for the full-screen mode and the mouse/touchpad which joins the touch controls designed for use on smartphones. The game is free to download with a variety of in-app purchases.

Games from the Chrome Web Store

Another option to play with your Chromebook is represented by the extensions of the Chrome Web Store that allow you to access some titles accessible from the web browser. These are fairly simple games but they can offer hours of fun. Here are some of the best titles:

Arcane Legends

Arcane Legends is one of the most interesting RPG titles available on the Chromebook. Available for free through the Chrome Web Store, the game offers everything you can look for in a classic role-playing game. Players have the opportunity to create their hero, choosing from several available classes, to complete various types of quests.

The game is also available with an Android app which, at the moment, is not fully optimized for Chromebooks. Arcane Legends is however fully playable via a web browser. The title offers many hours of fun guaranteeing a traditional RPG structure but with a light character and a very particular design. You can download it from here: Arcane Legends.

Pandemic 2

Available as an extension through the Chrome Web Store, with a completely free download, Pandemic 2 can, without a doubt, be defined as one of the games of 2020 (even if only for the topics covered). The player is called to choose disease and make sure that its spreading defeats humanity.

Pandemic 2 presents an extremely basic graphic sector, focusing much more on management content and the particular game theme than aesthetics. In any case, the title offers many hours of play in addition to varied gameplay that guarantees high replay value thanks to the possibility of having to deal with various variables. You can download it from here: Pandemic 2.

Save the Day

Save the Day is a title with a marked arcade character and with a very “old school” approach. The player, aboard a helicopter, will have to save people in difficulty and, at the same time, will have to avoid the threats posed by fires and obstacles of various types. The time available will be short and, therefore, the gameplay will be particularly intense and dynamic.

Also available in this case through the Chrome Web Store, Save the Day is an ideal solution for those looking for an arcade title that can offer lots of fun in short game sessions. It is, therefore, a perfect game for a little mobile gaming and a few hours of fun. Save the Day is freely downloadable from the Web Store: Save the Day.

Best Chromebooks for gaming?

Devices equipped with Chrome OS were born to be used, mainly on the move, for Internet access, and the use of “web-based” services. It is, therefore, an operating system and a range of devices that originally had very little to do with gaming. Unlike what is recorded with Windows solutions (and to a lesser extent macOS and Linux x), gaming on Chromebooks is a secondary activity compared to the fields of use of these machines.

Therefore, there are no “gaming” Chromebooks. When choosing a laptop with Chrome OS, in any case, you can keep in mind some aspects to improve the gaming experience with your device. Most of the titles available come from Android apps which represent a very important addition for Chromebooks. To have a good series of games to choose from, also in the future, it is advisable to focus on a Chromebook that supports Android apps.

To get the most out of Android apps on Chromebook you need to be able to count on a touch display. Many games (but also many apps) support the keyboard in a limited way and are optimized to give the best by using gestures and touch commands. Fortunately, most Chromebooks support this feature.

The future of gaming could also be linked to streaming platforms, as we have seen with Google Stadia. When choosing a Chromebook it is, therefore, advisable to analyze the performance of the connection. A good device must be able to guarantee excellent Wi-Fi connectivity or the possibility of connecting to the home router via ethernet (perhaps using a special ethernet adapter – USB-C).

Add Dropbox in Chromebook File Manager

Want to know how to add Dropbox File Manager in Chromebook? By default, you can only access Google Drive in the Chrome OS file manager. But if you prefer Dropbox on Google Drive, one option is to use the app Dropbox standalone on your Chromebook.

Although it works well enough, drag and drop support is missing which makes it difficult to transfer files back and forth. A better alternative is to use a third-party extension called “File System for Dropbox” which adds the Dropbox folder directly into the Chrome OS file manager. That’s how.

How to add Dropbox in Chromebook File Manager

Open the file manager on your Chromebook to add Dropbox in the Chromebook File Manager and click on the three-dot menu in the upper right corner. Now select the option called “Add new service” And click”Install new service” Among the displayed options.

Install new service

You can see a pop-up with all the available services that work with Chrome OS File Manager. Scroll down until you see the option called “File system for Dropbox“. Now click on the blue “Install” button next to it.

File system for Dropbox

The pop-up subsides indicating that it is installing the service. The installation may take two to five minutes to install. Since the installation process is a bit strange, you need to manually close the popup after five minutes. There will be no guidance on installing dropbox. If you waited five minutes, it will be installed without any problems.

Now again click on the three-point menu> Add new services, now you can see a new option called “File System for Dropbox“. Click on it.

On the window that appears, click on the “Add your Dropbox” To start the installation.

The Dropbox login page will open where you can log in to your Dropbox account or you can create a new account if you wish from here.

Once logged in, click the “Allow” button to authorize Dropbox to access system files and folders.

And that’s all, you have successfully installed Dropbox on your Chrome OS file manager and you can also transfer files between them by simply dragging them.

Chrome OS File Manager also supports OneDrive, but it doesn’t work or open for many people, if you are interested, you can also try it with the same method. However, Dropbox works perfectly with all the functionality you need but does not have an automatic backup function, so you must install the Android app.

If you’re having trouble with our tutorial on adding Dropbox in Chromebook File Manager, please report it in the comments below.

Third-party Browsers on Chromebooks

So you want to know how to install third-party browsers on Chromebook? Although there is no easy way to replace the Chrome browser on the Chromebook, it is, after all, a “Chromebook”, however, you can install third-party web browsers from the Play Store.

But they have their problems, for example, most Android browsers cannot take advantage of the desktop layout of the Chromebook. Likewise, most Linux apps are not optimized for Chromebooks as they run in the Sandbox environment.

Fortunately, there are still some browsers such as Firefox, Brave, and Samsung Internet which are not only optimized for the desktop layout but surprisingly they work well enough on the Chromebook. So, here is a step-by-step guide to help you.

How to install third-party browsers on Chromebooks

1. Mozilla Firefox

Although Firefox has multiple versions on Android, unfortunately, none of them take advantage of the desktop layout of the Chromebook. Fortunately, the Linux version works exactly like pictures.

The only caveat is that Linux on Chrome OS has its own storage space, so you can’t save files directly to local files, nor can you access any local files.

For example, if you download a document from the web using the Firefox browser, that file will not be available in the Downloads folder. Instead, your files will be stored in the Linux folder.

To install Firefox on your Chromebook, you must first enable Linux on your Chromebook. To do this, open the Chrome OS settings, click Linux (Beta) in the sidebar and click the “Activate” button next to the Linux option.

Now click on the Install button in the popup that appears. Once Linux is installed, you can see a terminal in the app drawer in the Linux folder.

app drawer in the Linux folder

Firefox ESR is already available in the Chromebook repository. In the terminal, just type the following text and press Enter to install Firefox

sudo apt install firefox-esr

Firefox ESR means Firefox Extended Support Release which is the version of Firefox for Entreprises. Instead of releasing constant updates, Firefox ESR gets updates upon completion of the update cycle. If you want to switch to the standard version of Firefox.

Install the ESR version to install dependencies with this command.

sudo apt install firefox-esr

Now, uninstall the ESR version, so that you can install standard Firefox.

sudo apt remove firefox-esr

Now all you have to do is run this command to install the standard version of Firefox.

sudo apt install iceweasel

2. Brave Browser

If you are looking for a browser that supports Chrome extensions and also has better privacy options than Chrome, Brave is for you.

To install third-party browsers on your Chromebook, make sure you’ve enabled Linux on your Chromebook. To do this, open the Chrome OS settings, click Linux (Beta) in the sidebar and click the “Activate” button next to the Linux option. Now click on the Install button in the popup that appears. Once Linux is installed, you can see a terminal in the app drawer in the Linux folder.

To install Brave on Chromebook, first run this command to update all dependencies

sudo apt upgrade

If you are asked to update something, just press Y and click Enter to update. Now enter the whole command into the terminal with a single click and click Enter.

Pro tip: – To paste into the terminal, you can use the keyboard shortcut: –  Crtl + Shift + V
(Ctrl + V, does not work on the terminal)

sudo apt install apt-transport-https curl

curl -s https://brave-browser-apt-release.s3.brave.com/brave-core.asc | sudo apt-key --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/brave-browser-release.gpg add -

echo "deb [arch=amd64] https://brave-browser-apt-release.s3.brave.com/ stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/brave-browser-release.list

sudo apt update

sudo apt install brave-browser

After completing the process, it should end with the Sudo apt install brave-browser command. Just click Enter to install the Brave browser and press Y to continue.

The process described above should install Brave Browser, but if you also receive an  error: invalid key. Then run these commands one after the other.

sudo apt-key of the C2D4E821
sudo apt remove brave-keyring
sudo apt clean

And then run this command again to install Brave.

curl -s https://brave-browser-apt-release.s3.brave.com/brave-core.asc | sudo apt-key --keyring /etc/apt/trusted.gpg.d/brave-browser-release.gpg add -

echo "deb [arch=amd64] https://brave-browser-apt-release.s3.brave.com/ stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/brave-browser-release.list

sudo apt update

sudo apt install brave-browser

It should end with the Sudo apt install brave-browser command. Just click Enter to install the Brave browser and press Y to continue. Brave browser should be installed on your Chromebook.

3. Samsung Internet

Of all the Android browsers including Chrome, Samsung Internet is the only browser that works well even in a desktop environment, thanks to Dex. So installing a third-party browser on Chromebook is as easy as downloading from the Play Store. Just open this link to open Samsung Internet on the Play Store and click Install.

Once you are on the Samsung Internet browser, click on the three-dot menu in the upper right corner and click on the option called “Desktop version” to enable the desktop layout on the browser. This setting will be saved on this device and there is no need to manually reset.

But the only caveat is right-clicking on the trackpad, but sometimes you cannot select options within the trackpad, so you need to use the arrow keys and click Enter or you can use the touchscreen to select the option which makes it a little inconsistent.

Disable Google Assistant

Having a voice assistant available and using artificial intelligence functions can be very useful and productive if however, you are among the users who for privacy reasons would like not to be listened to by the microphone, it is, fortunately, possible to completely disable Google Assistant on all Android smartphones and Chromebooks. Let’s see how to do it!

How to disable Google Assistant on Android devices

Android smartphone

Google Assistant is integrated and active by default at power on all systems that use Android.

The assistant is immediately ready for use and the advantages of having it at hand are practically innumerable, but if for any reason you do not want to use the digital help of the assistant on your Android smartphone, deactivating it is an extremely simple operation.

Here are the steps to do it :

Step 1:

  • Open the Google Assistant settings of your Android smartphone, go to Settings> Google> Account Services> Search, assistant and voice functions> Google Assistant ;

Step 2:

  • In the screen that opens, touch the Assistant tab  and scroll down to the bottom of the page;

Step 3:

  • In the Assistant Devices section, touch your device;

Step 4:

  • In the opened screen, now deactivate the assistant toggle.

Over the past two years, Google has started releasing Google Assistant on recent and non- Chromebooks.

Just like on a smartphone, the voice assistant also facilitates actions on the computer. However, if you don’t want to use the Assistant even on Chromebook, you can quickly disable it through the settings.

On your Chromebook, open the Settings app. In the sidebar, scroll down and click on  Search and Assistant. Click on the item to open the Google Assistant section. Then act on the first toggle to completely deactivate the assistant.

From now on, Google Assistant will no longer be active in the background and as a result, it will no longer be able to activate the microphone.

You will no longer be able to give voice commands for internet research, send a message or anything.

If you had second thoughts, you can reactivate the assistant, going to the settings listed above, and reactivating the toggle on the relevant page.

MS-DOS games on Chrome OS

With the arrival of Android applications and games to Chromebooks, these laptops made much more sense. The excuse that Chrome OS is only used to use Google applications in the cloud lost validity and made these cheap laptops a great bet.

Currently, you can enjoy many Android games on your Chromebook, and even games from other platforms through the best emulators for Android.

But what if you want to play MS-DOS classics like Wolfenstein 3D, the original Doom, or Quake? You can do it too! In this tutorial, we will teach you how to play MS-DOS games on a Chromebook, and since we will use an Android app, then it also works for your mobile.

What do you need to enjoy your MS-DOS games on your Chromebook? Requirements

Unlike most console emulators where you download the game and run it, emulating an MS-DOS game is not that simple. If it were, a tutorial wouldn’t be necessary, would it? To get started, you need to have a Chromebook that runs Android apps.

Don’t you know if yours can do it? Then check the list of Chromebooks with support for Android applications. In this list are all the compatible models from 2016 to 2019, and if your model is after that year and is not there, do not worry, because it is compatible.

The other thing you will need is an MS-DOS emulator. In Android, multiple options work both by command line or by the graphical interface, but without a doubt, Magic DosBox is the best.

This is one of the few emulators that still maintains its active development, and its compatibility with games is very wide.

Also, its support for keyboards, mice, joysticks, and controls is excellent, so it will also serve to use it on your mobile.

Magic DosBox has a free version that is the one we will use in this tutorial, but its premium version unlocks some additional features. You can download it from the Play Store.

Magic Dosbox Free Magic DosBox

What else do you need? Well, create a folder to host your games called DOSBox. Since you will use an Android app, you will have to create it in the Downloads folder of your Chromebook. The reason? It is the only Chrome OS directory to which Android apps have full access. With that, we are ready to start.

How to add MS-DOS games to your Chromebook using Magic DosBox

Once downloaded, install Magic DosBox on your Chromebook, you can check this tutorial on how to install Android apps on Chrome OS if you don’t know-how. Now, it’s time to see how MS-DOS games are installed with Magic DosBox, follow these steps:

  1. Download the installation package of your MS-DOS game. An excellent page for this is DOS Game Archive, and it is legal to download these games because their licenses have expired and are now shareware. We will use DOOM as an example.
  2. Once downloaded, create a folder with the name of the game inside the DOSBox directory you created earlier. Each game must have its folder so that Magic DosBox does not make mistakes.
  3. Unzip the game installer and copy the files into that game’s folder.
  4. Open Magic DosBox and press the “+” button to create a new game.
  5. In the window that opened, press the “Choose” button to tell the app where the installation package is located. Doing so will open the file explorer, select the folder, and confirm.
  6. Back to the previous screen, but the name with which you want the game to appear. Here you can also configure the amount of memory to use, the power of the CPU, and the sound card. In general, the base settings work, but some games have special requirements, especially sound.
  7. Confirm the changes with the corresponding button.

How to install MS-DOS games on your Chromebook

So far, you have already specified to Magic DosBox that there is a game on your Chromebook, but you have not installed it yet. To do this, continue with the following steps:

  1. On the Magic DosBox main screen, click and hold on the icon of the game you created and press “Edit” and then “Setup” to enter the installer.
  2. The game installation menu will open. Press the “C” key and then “Enter” to tell the emulator that you will install the game on the virtual disk C: \ (which is the folder you created earlier).
  3. After copying files is complete, the emulator will ask you which input device you will use to control that game. Since you are on a Chromebook, select “Keyboard + Mouse” and confirm.
  4. Complete the game installation by pressing “Enter” in each of the remaining steps.
  5. When you get to the final window, select “Save parameters and launch …”.
  6. The game will start and you will be able to enjoy it, but we recommend you do something additional so that you do not have to go through this process every time. Do the following:
    1. Emulation ends and returns to the main screen.
    2. Make a long click on the game icon and press “Edit”.
    3. Go to the “Software” section in the configuration menu.
    4. In the “Main program” section press “Choose” and select the executable of the game (“Doom.exe” in our case).
    5. In the “Setup” section press “Choose” and select the game installation executable (“Setup.exe” generally).
    6. Confirm the changes and voila!

In this way, the game will start directly because it is already installed, and you will not have to go through the installer before starting it.

How to configure the controls of an MS-DOS game in Magic Dosbox when using your Chromebook

The great advantage of using a Chromebook to emulate MS-DOS games is that you already have an integrated physical keyboard. Magic DosBox will automatically detect and map it, allowing you to immediately play hundreds of games. The same applies to a Chromebook with a touch screen, but what if you want to use a mouse, mouse, or controller? There the thing changes a little.

How to configure a USB mouse or the touchpad of your Chromebook in Magic DosBox to play MS-DOS games

Magic DosBox automatically recognizes USB mice and touchpads, but its accuracy is quite poor in the base configuration. For the emulator to perfectly follow the cursor movements, press the “Backspace” key and you will open the configuration menu. Among the options, go to “Widgets”, there to “Mouse Navigation” and put it in the “Absolute control” mode.

With this, the precision of the mouse will improve a lot, since the movements will not be taken as a virtualization of the touch screen. There are many MS-DOS games that only or mostly use the mouse, such as SimCity, and in this way, you can enjoy them to the fullest.

How to configure a controller or joystick in Magic Dosbox

Since MS-DOS is created for use on a computer, most of its games are played with keyboard and mouse. However, some that used a few buttons were compatible with controls, and of course, Magic DosBox allows you to do the same.

To configure a controller in this emulator, the first thing is that it is compatible with your Chromebook. If you have a controller to play on your Chromebook it is because you have used it before, therefore it should not give problems.

To configure the controller, just press the “Backspace” key to enter the Magic DosBox configuration. There, go to “Widgets” and there to the “Virtual Joystick” option. Once inside, map each button, joystick, or crosshead on your controller manually. Ready! To enjoy.

How to run MS-DOS games from disk images on your Chromebook

Sometimes certain MS-DOS games are found only as part of a build, and the download file comes in a disk image. This is something that also applies when you have the physical disk and digitize it. Likewise, some games necessarily require the disk to run, so the unit must be virtualized.

For all these cases, it is not enough to follow the standard installation steps, but you must change some things in the process. So what is the process? This is what you must do to run MS-DOS games from disk images on your Chromebook.

  1. Download or create the game disc image.
  2. Copy the image into the DOSBox folder.
  3. If the image is a file with a .img extension, change it to .iso so that Magic DosBox can read it.
  4. Create the new game in Magic DosBox and configure the C: \ drive in the DOSBox folder where the disk image is.
  5. Scroll down to the “CD-ROM” section and check “Enable
  6. Press the “+” button to the right of that same section and select the ISO image.
  7. Put the name you want to the game and confirm changes.

After this, you can run the file and Magic DosBox will give you the option to start an installer (in case you want to save everything in the storage) or directly run the disk. Select and enjoy it!

With all this, you will already be a true expert emulating MS-DOS games on your Chromebook. Now is the time to go enjoy those legendary games that existed for this platform.

Remember that Magic DosBox is an Android app, so you can configure the emulator on your mobile by following this same tutorial. Of course, there will be certain things that will change, like you can create the games folder anywhere or the settings of the controls, but in general, the process is quite similar.

Multiple Accounts On Chromebook

As with Android mobiles, when you turn on a Chromebook for the first time, the system will ask you to log in with a Google account. This is necessary to synchronize your Chromebook with all the preferences and settings of the Google apps that you use on other devices.

In this way, your Gmail account will be automatically signed in, all Chrome settings will be exported (bookmarks, history, passwords, extensions, contacts, among others), you will have access to your cloud in Drive, etc.

Now, if you are not the only one using the Chromebook, then you need to add another account. Even more possible is that you have several Google accounts and you need to have them all on your Chromebook, as each one you use for a specific purpose (one personal, one for school, one for work, etc.).

However, there is a problem with this and it is that Chrome OS allows you to add both other Google accounts and new users to your Chromebook, which can confuse you because “user” and “account” are terms that are often used as synonyms, but not it is so in this case.

Anyway, we’ll explain how to use multiple accounts on your Chromebook in a moment, distinguishing between the two possible ways of doing it and clarifying their advantages and disadvantages.

How to add a Google account to a Chromebook

To start, we will teach you how to add another Google account to your user on a Chromebook. It is very simple, you just have to follow these steps:

  • Tap the time button in the lower right corner of the screen.
  • Then tap the gear icon at the top of the window that just opened.
  • Go to the People section.
  • Select the icon for your Google account.
  • Press the Add account button.
  • Enter the email and password of the Google account you want to add and click Next.
  • Follow the steps indicated and ready.

Thus, you will have added a secondary Google account to your user on the Chromebook. To better understand what this secondary Google account can and cannot do on your Chromebook, here we leave you with their respective advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages of using a user for multiple accounts

  • Easy access to the data of other accounts: you can see the emails, files hosted in Drive, contacts, among other things, of the secondary account.
  • Use paid apps or subscriptions from other accounts: If you have an app purchased with a secondary Google account, you can install it on your Chromebook without having to change users. You just have to access the store, touch the icon of your account, choose the account that bought the payment app and then downloads it.
  • You can register on websites with your other accounts easily: instead of using your account to register everywhere, you can be more organized and use the secondary account you just added to register on those websites or apps you only enter out of curiosity and that you do not want to relate to your account.
  • It does not affect the performance of your Chromebook: having a user on your Chromebook for multiple Google accounts consumes fewer resources than having a user for each Google account you have. And it is that having multiple users, the processes will be duplicated (two browsers will be opened, for example), which consumes a lot of RAM and affects the overall performance of the Chromebook.

Disadvantages of using a user for multiple accounts

  • You cannot access the preferences of the secondary Google accounts: that is, you cannot see the history, bookmarks, or saved passwords of the secondary Google account in the browser.
  • There is no individual account security: if you lose your Chromebook and it did not have a password set, the thief will be able to access the information of all the Google accounts you added.
  • It can mix things up for bad: for example, if in the same user you added the Google account at work and your account, it is possible that you are working and you will start receiving social media notifications from the personal account, which will make you lose focus. It can also happen the other way around: you are watching Netflix and suddenly receive an email from work that ruins your leisure.

How to add another user to your Chromebook

Given the disadvantages presented above, you may have realized that what you need is to add another user to your Chromebook. To do this, all you have to do is the following :

  • Press the time button located in the lower right corner.
  • Click on Exit.
  • Tap Add a person.
    • Although, if you are going to lend your Chromebook to a person for a specific occasion and you will not use it regularly, you better choose the option Browse as a guest.
  • Next, you will have to add a Google account for the new user, entering the email and password. Do it, then follow the steps indicated and ready.

That way, you will have added a Google account to your Chromebook with a new user. Doing this with all your accounts, you will have a user for each of your Google accounts. The advantages and disadvantages of doing this are shown below.

Advantages of using a user for each account

  • You can use the settings and preferences of each Google account in the browser: that means that the bookmarks, passwords, extensions, and history of each of the Google accounts will be seen in Chrome separately. Also, the files and downloads will be separated in the Chromebook by account/user.
  • Individual account security: if you set a password for each user on your Chromebook and lose your laptop, whoever finds it will only have access to the Google account of the last user who used it. If you want to access the other accounts, you will have to enter the password of the other users.
  • Greater privacy: this method is ideal for those who share a Chromebook since each person can have their Google account open in a user that other people cannot access. They will be able to browse without seeing or modifying the data of other users, since, despite using the same laptop, they will use different and separate virtual spaces.

Disadvantages of using a user for each account

  • It is very impractical to use multiple accounts at the same time: if you have multiple users open at the same time, only one of them will be able to use the Android, Linux, and Google Assistant apps. Likewise, subscriptions or apps purchased with an account cannot be shared among users. So, switching between one user and another to use your different Google accounts, will make using the applications a headache.
  • It also makes file management problematic: with each user having a separate space on the Chromebook, you may download or create many files and then don’t remember which user the file you’re looking for is. This can become a huge headache when you want to find a particular file quickly.
  • RAM issues: If you keep multiple users open at the same time, many processes will stay open as well, resulting in huge RAM consumption. And what does that mean? That your laptop will go slower.

In short, choose the method you prefer, although you can also combine both. For example, if you share the Chromebook with a friend, add all your accounts to one user and have your friend add all their accounts to another user. The best thing is that you try different combinations to find the best way to use multiple accounts on your Chromebook.
