Yes, the title mentions Android Generic Project, but the reality is that this tool is only used by developers to port Android. What you will use to install an Android ROM on your PC is the final product. These are the steps you need to follow, which are actually very similar to Android x86, but please read to the end first:

  • Download Rufus on your computer from its official website. This tool will help you create a bootable USB key that will serve as an installer.

Step 3:

  • You can also burn the image to an optical drive like a DVD, and if you decide to do so, skip straight to step 10.

Step 4:

  • Install Rufus on your PC and open it.

Step 5:

  • Select the USB device that you will convert to a bootable drive.

Step 6:

  • In “Choosing start”, choose “Disk or ISO image”.

Next, press “Select” and add the ISO of the Android custom ROM that you have downloaded.

In the “Partition scheme” select GPT if your computer has UEFI or MBR if it has the classic BIOS (although a PC with UEFI should also read MBR).

Leave everything else as is and press “Start”.

Wait for the boot drive preparation process to finish, then close Rufus.

With the bootable USB key or bootable DVD ready and connected, reboot your computer.

Step 7:

  • Access the BIOS / UEFI of your motherboard.

Step 8:

  • Modify the boot order of the storage drives and put the drive first with the custom ROM installer.

Commit the changes and reboot. If you did everything right, the next time your computer boots it will try to boot from the bootable drive

Step 9:

  • Within the installer of your custom ROM, choose “advance options”

Step 10:

  • Select the option “… Install to specified hard disk”.

Step 11:

  • Choose the storage device and partition you want to install it on and confirm the action.

Be very careful what you do, especially if you are installing on a partition that has already been used. If you want to maintain two operating systems at the same time then the partitions of both systems must be different.

Step 12:

  • Wait for the installation process to finish and then select “reboot”.

Step 13:

  • Your computer will reboot and enter your Android custom ROM for the first time.

Step 14:

  • Complete the initial configuration of Android as on your mobile.

Step 15:

  • Enjoy your favorite custom ROM on your computer natively.

As you can see, it is a simple process, although there are some considerations. This installation process is the generic one used by Android X86 and is the one that all custom ROMs should use at least.

However, Android Generic Project allows you to modify many things, and perhaps a developer decides to change the process. Anyway, installing a custom ROM has never been a complex process, as long as you read and know what you’re doing, everything will be fine.

The procedure has been changed compared to previous versions of Android and involves the following steps:

  • access the menu Settings of the smartphone;
  • select the menu Apps and notifications;
  • press on advanced;
  • to select Special app access;
  • press on Install unknown apps.

At this point, it is necessary to select the application you want to install (for which to grant authorization for installation from unknown sources) and continue with the procedure until the installation is complete. Here too there may be small differences in the path to follow.

Before facing the thorny security issue of files with apk extension it is appropriate to wonder why a user should prefer this way, evidently more complex and articulated than to start the Google Play Store, search for the desired term, select the app and install it. The reasons, of course, are there and can also be very interesting.

Basically you need to know that the world of smartphone apps is much wider and more varied than we think. The apps are not only those present on the Google Play Store (as they seem, and they are, to be many).

Google requires certain standards to insert an application in a store but nothing prevents a developer from creating an app and distributing it outside the official Google store.

And so, in fact, it happens with hundreds of apps that are o revised or expanded versions apps already known (as in the case of WhatsApp Plus), programs not available in your country (not all existing apps are downloadable in Italy) or applications that offer services (such as downloading videos from YouTube or Facebook in a few clicks) for which there is no application on the Play Store that performs the same operations.

Most letter designations are something we will never find in small portable electronic devices; they are used in devices that can withstand high-pressure jets and high flow jets, such as a spray nozzle for washing cars.

Consumer electronics are not manufactured to withstand these conditions, but IP ratings cover more than consumer electronics, so they are included in IP certification.

Each digit represents a resistance rating. The first number represents the level of protection from solid particles (dust). The second number means protection from the ingress of liquids. A manufacturer does not need to test both, but if he does not, the number will be replaced by an X, we can see something like IPX7 or IP6X. see how the numbers pile up.

Do we already know everything we need?

When you buy a phone that has an IP68 rating, you can put it in a vacuum and the dust won’t get in, or let it be immersed in more than a meter of water forever, right? Do not.

The dust protection rating leaves zero room for maneuver. IP68 means dust under any conditions that a human being may be in. The liquid inlet protection 8 is “specified by the manufacturer” and you will need to know what that specification is. Samsung, for example, says the certification covers submersion up to 1.5mts for up to 30 minutes.

Can we go play with the phone to the pool without risk?

It is not so. Samsung also says your device is not impervious to water damage in any situation, which is a total contradiction. But it is not the only one – almost all electronic devices include text in the warranty or in the user manual that says that the warranty does not cover against water damage, even if the device in question is classified with an IP rating.

This is because the devices used for testing and certification were able to withstand the invasion of dust under any circumstances up to and including vacuum, and immersion in water at a depth of 1.5 m for half an hour. Your phone may not survive.

The certification feature cannot test all phones. IP certification is additional protection and not an absolute certainty that the equipment can be immersed without damage.

MIL-STD certification

This is a US military standard that specifies how something will behave against the environment during its lifetime. Android phones, watches and other electronics can carry MIL-STD 810G certification, which means that they were tested in a laboratory under conditions that simulate a gigantic list of environmental variables and continued to work. Some of the things that are tested include extreme temperatures, altitude, thermal shock, fungal entry, and frozen solids. This one an exhaustive list.

This certification seems to do little actually felt. To begin with, testing procedures clearly indicate that a manufacturer only needs to test simulated environments, which does not mean that it will withstand a real scenario. This leaves considerable room for interpretation and it is therefore important that rugged notebook manufacturers provide detailed information on which tests were conducted, how exactly they were conducted, what the results were and what these results really mean. The claim that a product is “certified by MIL-STD-810G” is not sufficient, and prospective customers should ask for more details.

To say that a device is MIL-STD 810G certified without providing a copy of the test parameters and the results mean the same thing as “this smartphone is fast” or “it has an excellent camera”. Never think that your electronic device will withstand these types of conditions unless you have seen the parameters and test results.

Viewing IP ratings and military-grade certification assessments on a phone is usually a good thing. Not all devices will pass all real-life tests, but there is a significant likelihood of going well.

Having an IP certified phone is great protection against accidents like spilling water or using it in a dusty environment, and a MIL-STD 810G certified phone will have more protection than one without. Just be aware that taking your smartphone to dive or in more aggressive activities can go wrong and the guarantee will not save you.
