How To Properly Install GPU Drivers (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel)

Install GPU Drivers

So you want to install the NVIDIA, AMD, Intel video card drivers correctly, ok but we do it with DDU. The computer is equipped with a graphics processor (GPU, graphics processing unit) present on a dedicated video card or the motherboard or the same integrated circuit of the central processor.

It is this graphics processor that manages the display and that allows you to play video games, perform video editing, 3D modeling and simply use your computer (it is he who manages rendering Windows and all applications).

NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel are the top three manufacturers of Windows desktop and laptop GPUs.

Sometimes, the graphics card drivers are outdated or defective, which can cause crashes, freezes, black screens, instabilities, or graphic bugs. You may also see the message “Display Driver stopped responding and has been reset” on Windows indicating that the video card driver is unstable.

On this page, we will see how to properly install the graphics card drivers using Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) to get a stable display and take advantage of the latest features of the latest driver.

Presentation

Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a driver removal utility that allows to completely uninstall drivers and packages from AMD / NVIDIA / Intel graphics cards without leaving a trace (registry keys, folders, and files, driver archive will all be deleted).

The drivers of the AMD / NVIDIA / Intel video card can normally be uninstalled from the Windows Control Panel, but the uninstallation of the drivers may fail or leave traces that may conflict with the new drivers you want to install.

DDU completely removes the drivers for AMD, NVIDIA, or Intel graphics cards and allows you to properly install the video card drivers.

Once done, all you need to do is install the latest driver for your graphics card for optimal stability and performance!

Recommendations before properly installing video card drivers

  • Disconnect your PC from the Internet, completely block Windows Update or disable automatic driver installation on Windows 10 when you run DDU until you reinstall the new drivers (to prevent Windows Update from installing its drivers)
  • DDU should be used if you have problems uninstalling or installing a video driver or when changing the manufacturer of the graphics card
  • DDU should not be used every time you install a new driver unless you know what you are doing
  • DDU is to be used on a local drive (not on a network drive)
  • DDU can be used in normal mode, but for optimal stability, it is advisable to use it in safe mode
  • If using DDU in normal mode: clean with DDU, restart, clean up with DDU, then restart
  • Make a backup or create a system restore point before using DDU
  • It is best to completely exclude the DDU folder from any security software (antivirus) to avoid problems.

Install the video card drivers correctly

To properly reinstall the graphics card driver with Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU), follow these instructions:

  • Create a system restore point. Link above.
  • Download Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) and unzip the archive.
  • Double click on DDU.exe, then click the button Extract.
  • You get a DDU folder containing the executable Display Driver Uninstaller.ex and that will have to be done later.

Download the latest driver for your graphics card:

  1. AMD
  2. NVIDIA
  3. Intel
  • [Opzionale] Disable automatic driver installation on Windows 10 to prevent Windows from installing its own version of the driver’s video card (which is often out of date).
  • Restart Windows in safe mode.
  • Run Display Driver Uninstaller.exe, do click on OK, then leave the default options by clicking Close.
  • On the right, select GPU and therefore the manufacturer of the graphics card ( NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel ).
  • Click on the button Clean and restart.
  • Wait for the drivers and software of the video card to be removed, the computer will restart.

Once your PC has restarted, simply run the previously downloaded NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel video card driver installer to install an updated video driver.

If you have not disabled automatic driver installation on Windows 10, disconnect from the Internet or temporarily block Windows Update to prevent it from installing your version of the driver.

Congratulations! You have successfully uninstalled the drivers for your video card and reinstalled the latest drivers.
