Currently, Huawei is distributing a small system update patch for multiple devices. The interesting thing is the fact that it is apparently also available for older devices.

Currently, Huawei P20 and P30 Lite have received the system patch, but also Mate 9! This smartphone introduced in November 2016 has not actually received any updates for about a year. But like the P9 Lite occasionally, Huawei makes an exception and distributes the particularly important changes to older devices.

Unfortunately, the changelog does not explain what changes were made or for which applications.

The update does not bring a new version of Android or EMUI and the security patch level remains unchanged.

The update comes via OTA and is only a few MB in size. Performing an early backup is never a bad idea, but we have no reports of problems with the update; therefore, it is not necessary to do so.

The firmware for the system patch on the Huawei P20 is:

EML-L29 9.1.0.387 (C432E10R1P12patch01)

The update size is 25.81 MB.

Update notes (for all devices):

  1. The update will not delete personal data. However, we recommend that you back up important data before updating.
  2. If problems occur during the update, call the Huawei customer hotline or visit a Huawei customer service center.

General information

Once an update is released, only one percent of activated devices are updated in the first 24 to 48 hours. This means that device check-ins can be observed first and checked for errors. Updates are scheduled to take place within one to two weeks.
The arrival to all possible devices is carried out in stages from 25% to 50% to 100%. This can take up to eight weeks.
