How to activate music in Google Maps on iPhone?
First, you need to activate the music application on Google Maps to access and control playback.
Step 1: Open Google Maps and tap your little avatar in the top right corner. After that select Settings and then Navigation from the menu.
Step 2: Scroll down until you see the music playback controls option and tap on it to select it.
At the time of writing this article, in February 2022, the iPhone gives you two options – Apple Music and Spotify. Unfortunately, YouTube Music support is not available for all regions. Select one of them and save the settings. Depending on the application you choose, you may need to grant different permissions.
Step 3: Now open Apple Music and choose the song of your choice. Once done, open Maps and start navigating. Playback controls will appear under the navigation details. You will only be able to access the player settings if there is no song playing in the application. You will have to play the songs manually before or after you start browsing.
But the good news is that you can view your playlists with one tap. Just tap the little “Browse” icon, and the playlist will be available on the next page. Alternatively, you can ask Siri to change the song for you.
Note that Apple Music does not allow browsing the playlist content. Fortunately, there’s a neat Apple Music button at the top.
On the other hand, Spotify gives you the option to Continue Playing when you start browsing. At the same time, you can directly select songs from playlists.
Spotify integration seems best done on the iPhone.
How to enable music on Google Maps on Android?
Google Maps provides a variety of options compared to iOS. For example, you can customize the Travel with Pins and Location settings to your preference. And the same also applies to the music player. For example, Google Maps for Android supports apps like Spotify, YouTube Music, Apple Music, and other music streaming services.
Step 1: Open Google Maps and tap on the avatar icon in the top right corner. This will bring up all the options. Scroll down until you see Navigation. Scroll down until you see Navigation Settings.
Step 2: Under Navigation Settings, scroll down to the default media provider wizard option.
By default, the system chooses the music from YouTube. However, you will need to be subscribed to YouTube Premium to be able to play the songs on Maps. If you are on the free version, YouTube Music will simply stop playing the song once you switch to Maps or any other application. The good thing is that you can select music from other services like Spotify and Apple Music.
Step 3: Once you have chosen your music application, open it and choose a song.
In the meantime, start navigating Google Maps, and the player controls will be available at the bottom immediately above the Assistant settings. Unlike iPhone, Android does not allow you to change the playlist within Maps. But when you tap on the song, it opens the song details page. Fortunately, there’s a Maps icon at the bottom to help you navigate back.
However, if you have to choose a new song or playlist, you will have to go back to Spotify by tapping the ‘Browse Spotify’ button at the bottom. Once done, go back to Maps, through the Navigation bar.
If you can’t take your hands off the wheel, you can always ask the Google Assistant to change the song.
While not as feature-rich as a dedicated music player, the Google Maps app’s music control features are still surprisingly complete. With just a few taps, we can play and pause songs, adjust the volume, and even see what song is playing. So if you need to take a break from browsing but don’t want to completely mute your music, the Google Maps app does what you need.
